En el día de ayer se conmemoró el aniversario de la firma del Convenio Ramsar. La Provincia de San Luis cuenta con un Sitio Ramsar.

Desde 1997, el 2 de febrero se celebra el Día Mundial de los Humedales en conmemoración de la firma de la Convención sobre los Humedales de Importancia Internacional. Se llevó a cabo en Ramsar, Irán, el 2 de febrero de 1971. Firmada por dieciocho Estados y según la información disponible, dicha Convención es el único tratado ambiental mundial para un solo bioma.

De acuerdo a la terminología técnica de los científicos que abordan el estudio de los Humedales, los mismos  son planicies de inundación permanente o intermitente, de agua dulce o salada, que pueden estar al nivel del mar o en altura.

Son sitios de biodiversidad, por lo que cumplen funciones indispensables para la vida: proveen agua, alimento y remedios naturales, controlan inundaciones, mitigan la crisis climática con su almacenamiento de carbono y regulan la temperatura.

En nuestra Provincia contamos con un complejo lagunar que posee la categoría de Sitio Ramsar o humedal de importancia internacional. También es considerada un área de importancia para la conservación de las aves –AICA-. El 14 de Diciembre de 1999 fue designado el Sitio Ramsar Lagunas de Guanacache incluyendo 580.000 ha. de las Provincias de Mendoza y San Juan. El 5 de junio de 2007 fue ampliado pasando a denominarse Lagunas de Guanacache, Desaguadero y Del Bebedero, incluyendo 962.370 ha. de las Provincias de Mendoza, San Juan y San Luis.
