Desde su llegada al club en 2016 fue ganándose un lugar en la consideración de Marcelo Gallardo. Tras cuatro años y 185 partidos, el volante es uno de los emblemas de plantel y uno de los futbolistas con mayor nivel del fútbol argentino. Incluso es uno de los máximos goleadores del ciclo Gallardo, con 31 goles.

Su buen rendimiento, que le valió incluso un debut en la Selección, puso a Nacho en el radar de equipos importantes. Uno de ellos es Atlético Mineiro: el equipo que dirige Sampaoli se contactó con el y está decidido a llevarselo. La clausula es de 8 millones, y todo indica que un grupo inversor ayudaría al club de Minas Gerais a pagar el fichaje.

Ante la difícil situación económica de River la venta de Fernandez podría aliviar un poco las arcas del club. Desde su entorno comunicaron que el futbolista ve con buenos ojos su llegada a Brasil, ya que transitó toda su carrera en Argentina y le gustaría hacer una diferencia económica.

Mientras tanto, el Millonario está en tratativas para contratar a Agustín Palavecino. El volante ofensivo podría funcionar como reemplazo de Fernandez, y solo resta acordar con Deportivo Cali su salida del club.

De esta manera River Plate se prepara para el inicio de la Copa de la Liga Profesional. Su primer encuentro será contra Estudiantes de visitante. La segunda fecha, de nuevo en el Monumental.
