Este 17 de mayo se celebran 227 años del nacimiento del Coronel. Uno de los puntanos más valientes, que entregó su vida por la patria.

Por su heroica labor, Pringles es recordado en todo el país. Este busto está en la ciudad que lleva su nombre, Coronel Pringles.

Hoy Juan Pascual Pringles, el famoso «Heroe de Chancay», estaría cumpliendo 227 años. Su vida fue mucho más breve, pero siempre movida por el amor a una nación emergente en ese entonces.

Nacido en San Luis en 1795, fue un hombre sencillo, honesto y leal con la Patria. Pringles vivió en un tiempo de guerras y batallas, donde transcurrió su carrera militar. En 10 años pasó de ser alférez a Coronel, y todas sus condecoraciones fueron en el campo de batalla.

Participó de las guerras de independencia, bajo las órdenes de San Martín, Bolívar y Sucre. Con apenas 20 años inició su gloriosa trayectoria en batallas, enfrentando al ejército realista.

Falleció muy joven, a sus 36 años. Llegó a la tierra que lo vio nacer gravemente herido, y murió esperando un vaso de agua que nunca llegó.

Luchó por liberar a todo un continente.

Su carrera militar

Pringles blandió su espada en las luchas por la independencia de toda la región. En 1819 participó de la sublevación de los prisioneros realistas. Poco después, fue dado de alta como Alférez del Regimiento de Granaderos a Caballo, con base en La Chacras.

Nuestro héroe fue padre de Fermina Nicasia Pringles, fruto de su matrimonio con Valentina Villegas.

En 1820 partió partió a liberar al Perú de sus cadenas. Es recordado por arrojarse al mar en la Batalla de Chancay, para evitar caer prisionero de España. Por su bravura en la Playa de los Pescadores fue perdonado por la corona y condecorado por el General San Martín. Al poco tiempo logró entrar en Lima el 9 de Julio y participó de la batalla de Pasco. Por esta victoria recibió la Orden del Sol en grado de Benemérito.

En septiembre de 1822 fue ascendido a Capitán y acompañó al General Alvarado en la Batalla de Taca. Y en 1824 salvó la vida de Necochea, en la victoria que logró el Ejército Libertador en Junín. Su ultima batalla por la independencia del continente fue en Ayacucho, bajo el mando de Sucre.

Sus labores hasta entonces le permitieron ascender a Teniente Coronel, condecoración entregada por Simón Bolívar.

Años después, nuestro protagonista combatió a Brasil, en la batalla del arroyo Taim laguna Merim. Tras su extensa labor continental, regresó a Buenos Aires en 1829 para unirse a las fuerzas del General José María Paz, que marchó a Córdoba combatiendo en San Roque y la Tablada.

El Coronel Pringles fue gobernador de San Luis y participó de la Batalla de Oncativo, de 1930. Al volver a su tierra formó el «Escuadrón de Lanceros de San Luis», con el que peleó en Córdoba un año después.

Pringles volvió derrotado por Quiroga y fue alcanzado por el Ejército Federal en Chañaral de las Ánimas, donde murió en 1831.

Una vida dedicada a su patria, con la guerra como oficio. El mismo Juan Esteban Pedernera afirmó sobre Pringles: «Durante mi larga vida militar, sólo el valor de un hombre he envidiado: el del coronel Juan Pascual Pringles, el héroe de Chancay». Esta valentía es recordada en todo nuestro país: escuelas, calles, ciudades y plazas llevan el nombre de este bravo patriota.
