Covid: Científicos puntanos desarrollan una técnica para detectar la variante Ómicron

El procedimiento fue utilizado en un villamercedino, el primer caso registrado en el país. Se utilizará en nuevas muestras seleccionadas mediante un proceso de «tamizaje».

La noticia de que la variante Ómicron ya circula en el país motivó a los científicos de todo el país a encontrar un método eficaz para detectar los casos de Coronavirus que correspondan a esta nueva mutación. Por ese motivo, científicos de la Universidad Nacional de San Luis -UNSL- están desarrollando una técnica para detectar la nueva cepa, y ya fue usada en el primer paciente registrado con la Ómicron.

El equipo de investigadores está compuesto por Jimena Manzur, docente de la UNSL especializada en Biología Molecular e Ingeniería Genética; junto a los científicos Maximiliano Juri Ayub, José Luis Arias, Ludmila Campos y Marianela Leporatti.  Asimismo, colaboran profesionales de Mendoza, del Hospital Central, e integrantes del Laboratorio de Salud Pública Provincial «Dr. Dalmiro Pérez Laborda».

¿Cómo funciona la nueva técnica?

Manzur explicó que tomaron como base un ensayo previo con PCR, para detectar en tiempo real la variante Alfa, cepa primigenia del virus.  «Justamente la variante ómicron comparte mutaciones con la variante alfa, y como la segunda ya no circula en nuestro país podemos, con el mismo ensayo, detectar la presencia de la nueva variante», añadió la investigadora.

Las mutaciones que diferencian a la variante nacida en Sudáfrica de las previamente existentes se alojan en un región de la proteína llamada Spike. En este sentido, uno de los objetivos del equipo es aumentar la selectividad del ensayo: actualmente se valen de una técnica llamada «tamizaje», que permite evaluar rápidamente un alto número de muestras positivas para SARS-CoV-2 y seleccionar las candidatas a ser secuenciadas.

Manzur consideró que la detección temprana de las nuevas variantes permite implementar oportunamente las medidas de contención, para evitar que el virus se propague.  «Han aparecido muchas variantes durante el año y muchas han sido de preocupación, como fue alfa, delta y ahora ómicron. La idea es que no nos agarre desprevenidos y poder hacer las cosas a tiempo, para que justamente el tamizaje, la búsqueda, ocurra en el momento oportuno», opinó la investigadora.
