El fenómeno telúrico fue de 7,8 grados. Más de mil edificios se derrumbaron por completo. 

Un sismo de magnitud 7,8 grados sacudió el sur de Turquía y el norte Siria, causando cientos de muertos y miles de heridos así como importantes daños, según los primeros balances.

El último balance constata que el terremoto ha dejado al menos 912 muertos en Turquía y otros 473 en Siria, de manera que el balance total ya suma más de 1.300 fallecidos.

Más de mil edificios se derrumbaron totalmente, lo que deja prever un balance mucho más grave, agregó.

El temblor se sintió a las 4:17 (23:13 hora argentina) y se produjo a una profundidad de 17,9 kilómetros, según el Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos (USGS).

El epicentro se situó en el distrito de Pazarcik, en la provincia de Kahramanmaras, en el sureste de Turquía, a unos 60 kilómetros de la frontera siria.

El movimiento telúrico se sintió también en el Líbano y Chipre, según periodistas de AFP.

Es muy probable que el balance se agrave rápidamente, teniendo en cuenta el número de edificios derrumbados en las ciudades más afectadas, como Adana, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa y Diayarbakir, en el sureste de Turquía.

Debido a la hora en que ocurrió el sismo, de madrugada, la mayoría de la gente estaba durmiendo en sus casas.

«Mi hermana y sus tres hijos están bajo los escombros. También su marido, su suegro y su suegra. Siete miembros de nuestra familia están bajo los escombros», explicó a la AFP Muhittin Orakci, mientras presenciaba las operaciones de rescate delante de un edificio en ruinas en Diyarbakir.

«Su hermana sigue bajo los escombros», dijo una mujer señalando a otra víctima desconsolada en la misma localidad.

Por seguridad, se cortó el gas en toda la zona, por las réplicas y por temores a que se produjeran explosiones.
