Los equipos de rescate en Turquía y el norte de Siria luchaban este martes contra el reloj y el frío para buscar entre los escombros a sobrevivientes del devastador sismo que afectó a ambos países en la madrugada del lunes y que provocó más de 5.000 muertos y miles de heridos, según los últimos balances oficiales.
La ayuda internacional empezaría a llegar hoy las zonas castigadas por el terremoto y sus réplicas, según consignó la agencia de noticias AFP, mientras que desde la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) se advirtió que el potente terremoto podría afectar a 23 millones de personas en esas regiones, incluyendo cinco millones de personas vulnerables.
La primera sacudida, en la madrugada del lunes, alcanzó una magnitud 7,8 y se sintió hasta en Líbano, Chipre y el norte de Irak.
En Turquía, el número de muertos se elevó a 3.419 personas muertas y 20.534 heridas, declaró hoy el vicepresidente Fuat Oktay.
En Siria, al menos 1.602 personas fallecieron y 3.640 resultaron heridas, según los balances de las autoridades de Damasco y de los equipos de rescate de las zonas rebeldes.
En base a los mapas de la zona afectada, una responsable de la OMS, Adelheid Marschang, indicó que «23 millones de personas están expuestas» a las consecuencias del terremoto, «incluyendo cinco millones de personas vulnerables».
Los socorristas continuaron la dramática búsqueda de sobrevivientes durante la noche, desafiando el frío, la lluvia o la nieve y el riesgo de nuevos derrumbes.
En Hatay, en el sur de Turquía, rescataron con vida a una niña de 7 años que había quedado bloqueada bajo una montaña de escombros.
Las malas condiciones meteorológicas en la región de Anatolia complican las labores de rescate y ensombrecen las perspectivas de los supervivientes, que se calientan en tiendas o en hogueras improvisadas.
Se espera que la ayuda internacional a Turquía empiece a llegar hoy con los primeros equipos de socorristas de lugares como Francia o Catar.
El presidente estadounidense, Joe Biden, prometió a su par turco, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, «toda la ayuda necesaria, sea la que sea».
El contingente francés pretende llegar hasta Kahramanmaras, en el epicentro del terremoto, una región de acceso difícil y sepultada bajo la nieve.
Dos destacamentos estadounidenses con 79 socorristas cada uno se estaban preparando el lunes para desplazarse al lugar, indicó la Casa Blanca.
También China anunció hoy el envío de una ayuda de 5,9 millones de dólares, que incluirá equipos especializados en el socorro en entornos urbanos, equipos médicos y material de urgencia, según un medio estatal de Pekín.
En cambio, el llamado lanzado por el Gobierno de Siria recibió por ahora respuesta de Moscú, su aliado, que prometió equipos de socorro «en las próximas horas», además de 300 militares rusos que ya se encuentran en el lugar para ayudar en el rescate.
La ONU también reaccionó, pero insistió en que la ayuda debe llegar a toda la población siria, incluida la parte que no está bajo control de Damasco.
