Joe Biden hace pocos días que es presidente de la mayor potencia del mundo, y ya está dando que hablar, tanto para propios como para ajenos. Una de sus primeras medidas fue nominar a Rachel Levine como su nuevo Vicesecretario de Salud, pero la novedad es que Rachel es transgénero, convirtiéndose así en la primera persona “trans” en ocupar un alto cargo jerárquico en la estructura burocrática del estado norteamericano.
Levine, además de ser transexual viene con una amplia experiencia en temas sanitarios, ya que ha ocupado cargos públicos como Secretaria de Salud en el Estado de Pennsilvania desde mediados de 2019. Los partidarios de Biden aplaudieron la designación que llevo a tener a los demócratas, su primer funcionario “transexual” cumpliendo así las promesas de campaña de dar más espacio en el gobierno al colectivo LGTB.
Sin embargo, los republicanos criticaron la decisión del actual presidente por considerar que, más allá de su sexualidad, Rachel Levine no ha sabido manejar los temas de salud relacionados con la pandemia en Pennsilvania, en dónde hizo internar a todos los ancianos en geriátricos, para no colapsar los hospitales, pero esto, según sus críticos, fue lo que generó un aumentó de los fallecimientos en ese grupo poblacional. Asimismo, critican que hayan impuesto una cuarentena terrible que hizo estragos en la economía de ese estado, generando una crisis económica tremenda y aumentando le desempleo, además de la tensión social.
Los republicanos catalogaron la política sanitaria de Levine como criminal, insensible e hipócrita, dado que hizo retirar a su madre, de 95 años, del geriátrico en dónde se hallaba internada, pero no levanto la internación para el resto de los ancianos que se hallaban alojados en esas instituciones. No obstante, más allá de las críticas, los demócratas están contentos porque “sleepy” Joe ha nombrado a una gran promotora de los derechos LGBT como es Rachel, y esperan que este sólo el primero de tantos y tantas otras que se puedan incorporar como funcionarios a la Casa Blanca.
