Editorial: Abigail, el reflejo de un estado y una política sin valores

Hace tan sólo unos meses Argentina se vió conmovida por una imagen que terminó siendo un símbolo de la peor cara de la pandemia, y de una cuarentena que fue atroz en más de un sentido. Esa imagen es la de Abigail Jiménez y Diego, su papá, quien ante la negativa de los policías que se encontraban en un puesto de control de ingreso a la provincia, decidió cargarla en brazos y cruzar igual, ya que la niña de 12 años se encontraba afectada de cáncer y quería llevarla a su casa después de un control médico.

Ese 16 de noviembre de 2020, Abigail fue traslada por su papá desde Santiago del Estero al hospital de niños de Tucumán, para que la nena pueda realizarse el tratamiento oncológico que allí le brindaban. Al regreso, cuando quisieron entrar nuevamente en su provincia, les fue negado el acceso porque se requería la autorización del Comité de Emergencia. Tanto Abigail, como su papá estuvieron más de dos horas varados en la frontera bajo el rayo del sol y rodeados de moscas, hasta que Diego decidió tomarla en brazos y cruzar la frontera como sea.

Pero lo peor de todo, es que Diego contaba con la autorización del intendente, pero al no tener el permiso de emergencia, prefirieron dejarlos parados en la ruta, aún a pesar de que la niña se encontraba muy mal, antes que permitirle el paso. Ayer domingo, Abigail falleció, y hoy empieza otro debate.

Hoy se abre otra discusión. No puede soslayarse que casos como el de Abigail fueron la muestra cabal de un estado que no supo coordinar políticas públicas durante la pandemia, sencillamente se dejo librada a la arbitrariedad de cada agente público la decisión de como aplicar las recomendaciones y los protocolos para circular, lo que termino generando un estado, no sólo autoritario, sino que moralmente reprobable. Un estado que se posiciona en contra de sus propios ciudadanos, y que en un momento donde contamos con la tecnología necesaria para acelerar las comunicaciones y las decisiones, la desidia política y la falta de sensibilidad son el peor enemigo que hoy encontramos para hacer efectivas nuestras propias libertades.

Lo que está en discusión hoy es el rol del estado durante la pandemia, y no sólo en este caso, también en Formosa, y otros lugares del país, dónde en nombre de una amenaza sanitaria se destruyeron las libertades más básicas que gozábamos como ciudadanos de un país democrático. Abigail fue un símbolo, pero no un símbolo más, sino aquél que mostro el peor rostro de las decisiones políticas en una pandemia que, a pesar de los discursos grandilocuentes, nadie supo cómo gestionar.

El fallecimiento de Abigail nos entristece a todos, pero también nos mueve a reflexionar, porque esa misma política, y ese mismo estado que le prohibió el ingreso a su provincia, es el mismo estado y la misma política que unos días después organizó, en plena pandemia, un velorio multitudinario, y ni que hablar de las marchas de fin de 2020. Es decir, tenemos un estado y una política que considera a la mayoría de sus ciudadanos como de segunda categoría, y dónde los derechos solo pueden ejercerse en función del lugar en que uno se encuentre en la pirámide social. Eso no es democracia.

Los ejemplos de Abigail pueden multiplicarse a lo largo y ancho del país, como sucedió en Córdoba en donde un padre no pude despedirse de su hija que estaba moribunda; o en Formosa, dónde un gobernador decide encerrar como presos a los ciudadanos que se encuentran enfermos, y podríamos seguir con la lista.

La reflexión entonces debería guiarnos hacia que tipo de estado y de sociedad queremos realmente, y ser consecuentes con esa elección. No hay ningún tipo de crisis sanitaria que excuse a los funcionarios de la degradación de nuestros derechos, por lo que la restitución y el respeto de los mismos debe exigirse incansablemente y sin pausa. No podemos dejar que nuestra democracia quede sólo en manos de políticos y agentes estatales, es también nuestra responsabilidad, sino las Abigail se van a seguir multiplicando ante nuestros ojos, y eso es algo inadmisible moralmente.
