Coronavirus: la OMS descarta que el virus haya escapado de un laboratorio

La Organización Mundial de la Salud confirmó que la enfermedad tiene origen animal, luego de una investigación llevada a cabo en China.

La OMS ha publicado en conferencia de prensa algunos de los avances logrados en su investigación acerca del COVID-19. Los científicos estuvieron un mes en la ciudad de Wuhan, donde aparecieron los primeros infectados, para poder conocer más sobre una patología que sigue envuelta en misterio a más de un año de su aparición.

La primer conclusión que lograron es que el virus no comenzó a propagarse en el Mercado de Wuhan, donde se contagiaron dos tercios de sus trabajadores. El establecimiento, dedicado a la venta de carne y productos de origen animal, había sido señalado por la prensa como el primer epicentro. No obstante, afirmaron que el virus ya circulaba antes de los contagios en el Mercado.

La segunda certeza tiene que ver con el comienzo de los contagios: tras estudiar cifras de ventas de medicamentos utilizados para síntomas similares al COVID, descartaron que la enfermedad haya existido antes de Diciembre de 2019.

Sin embargo, donde la agencia aún sigue buscando precisiones es respecto al origen del virus. La agencia trabajó con cuatro hipótesis: que haya sido contagiada por un animal al humano -vía directa-, que haya intervenido una tercera especie -vía indirecta-, que se haya producido por el transporte de alimentos congelados, y que haya escapado de un laboratorio. Los científicos consideraron a esta última teoría extremadamente improbable y ya fue descartada.

La polémica en torno al controvertido origen del Coronavirus se incrementó luego de las acusaciones de Donald Trump hace un año. El ex mandatario apuntó contra el Instituto de Virología de Wuhan como responsable de la pandemia. Sin embargo, Koopmans y Ben Embarek echaron por tierra esta posibilidad.

La OMS pudo confirmar que el origen proviene de un animal, aunque aún continúan trabajando en determinar la especie y el modo de contagio. Para Ben Embarek, la investigación apunta a “un reservorio natural” de murciélagos como el animal original, aunque es improbable que el salto se diera en Wuhan.
