El pasado 25 de mayo el mundo quedó horrorizado: el racismo mostró una de sus peores caras. ¿Cómo es posible que lo que aprendes te lleve a matar a un hombre a sangre fría?

Aquel 25 de mayo George Floyd vió la muerte a manos de Derek Chauvin, un ex oficial de la Policía de Minnesota. La muerte de Floyd constituye un crimen de odio en plena expresión: a su triste final ayudó el racismo que al día de hoy las minorías étnicas sufren en Estados Unidos. La brutalidad y el racismo policial quedaron expuestos, desenmascarados.

A Chauvin le atribuyeron los cargos de asesinato en segundo grado, asesinato en tercer grado u homicidio involuntario. Entre los tres cargos suman una posible pena máxima de cárcel de 70 años, informó el canal de noticias CNN. Al momento de leer el veredicto Derek Chauvin se encontraba en libertad bajo fianza, que fue revocada inmediatamente para trasladarlo a una celda.

Sin embargo, la sentencia aún no se hizo efectiva: deberán esperar ocho semanas más. En paralelo, el Presidente Joe Biden calificó de «abrumadoras» las pruebas contra Chauvin y pidió que el veredicto dictado en Minnesota sea correcto.

Ante el miedo de protestas violentas, tales como las del año pasado, la comisaría principal de la ciudad de Minneapolis, cerraba sus puertas y tapiaba las ventanas. El veredicto tenía en vilo a todo un país, y las reacciones eran inciertas.

Una historia de dolor e ira

Las protestas en Minneapolis fueron sumamente violentas.

La ola de protestas y contraprotestas desatadas tras el asesinato de Floyd generó una de las peores escaladas de violencia política en años.

Floyd había sido acusado de pagar con un billete falso de 20 dólares. La policía lo interceptó y lo redujo cruelmente. Con varios policías alrededor, Chauvin se arrodilló sobre el cuello de Floyd durante más de nueve minutos y, pese a los ruegos del hombre, se mantuvo allí hasta que el corpulento hombre de 46 años dejó de respirar.

La muerte fue registrada por la cámaras y se viralizó instantáneamente. Millones de personas a lo largo del mundo hicieron eco de lo sucedido, e incluso celebridades salieron a quejarse ante el racismo estructural que aqueja a Estados Unidos.

Solamente queda esperar la sentencia ahora. La justicia está un poco más cerca, aunque los cambios no terminan acá. La cuenta pendiente está en el imaginario social.
