La fecha fue instituida en 1987 por la Asamblea Mundial de la Salud, con el objetivo de generar conciencia sobre los daños del consumo de tabaco. Hoy en día, es la principal causa de muerte en todo el mundo.

El Día Mundial Sin Tabaco se celebra en todo el mundo el 31 de mayo de cada año. Esta celebración busca informar al público sobre los peligros que supone el consumo de tabaco. Asimismo, critica las prácticas comerciales de las empresas tabacaleras.

La Organización Mundial de la Salud -OMS- considera al tabaquismo como una epidemia. Es la mayor causa de muerte prevenible en todo el mundo, y mata a 1 de cada 10 adultos. En nuestro país, 40.000 personas mueren anualmente por el consumo de cigarrillo.

En este sentido, la OMS diseñó actividades para luchar contra la epidemia de tabaquismo: se intenta que las personas de todo el mundo reivindiquen su derecho a la salud y a una vida sana, y protejan a las futuras generaciones.

Como sabemos, los efectos del consumo del tabaco en todas sus formas son nocivos y letales. Según la OMS, uno de cada tres adultos fuma, lo que equivale a 1.100 millones de personas consumidoras de tabaco. El 80% de esos fumadores son de países con ingresos bajos y medios. Para 2025, se espera que la cantidad de fumadores globales ascienda a 1.600 millones.

Lo que es más, el consumo de tabaco no solo es perjudicial para el fumador, sino que daña a los fumadores pasivos. Anualmente, 1.2 millones de personas fallecen por ser fumadores pasivos.

Fumar también agrava las enfermedades cardiovasculares, oncológicas y otras condiciones como la diabetes. En lo que respecta el al Covid-19, los fumadores de tabaco tienen más riesgo de desarrollar cuadros severos e incluso morir por el virus.
