Siguiendo la línea de concientización y prevención del Cáncer de Mama, decidimos mostrar dos actividades importantes a la hora de detectar tumores en las mamas. Lo recomendable es que ambas se realicen de forma conjunta y complementaria.

Autoexamen

Es una conducta cada vez más extendida entre las mujeres de todo el mundo, y aunque no siempre es una manera fiable para detectar un cáncer, si puede ayudar a registrar anomalías en nuestra anatomía y consultar a un médico. Esta práctica es importante, ya que gran cantidad de mujeres acuden al médico luego de haber detectado ellas mismas un bulto o alguna anomalía en su pecho.

El primer paso es la inspección visual: con el torso desnudo frente al espejo y los brazos a los costados es importante observar:

  • Arrugas, hoyuelos o alteraciones en el tamaño, la forma o la simetría de los senos.
  • Si los pezones están hundidos -invertidos-.

Luego hay que modificar la posición e inspeccionar las mamas cuando:

  • Presionamos sobre sus caderas con las manos.
  • Levantamos los brazos sobre la cabeza y presionamos con las palmas de las manos una sobre otra.
  • Levantamos las mamas para observar si los pliegues de la base son simétricos.

Tras este paso se pasa al examen manual. Esta instancia consiste en palpar las mamas para registrar anomalías que no se observen a simple vista. En este paso podes:

  • Utilizar las yemas de los dedos u otra parte de la mano que sea más sensible, como la palma o el dorso de los dedos.
  • Aplicar diferentes niveles de presión: el objetivo es palpar todo el tejido mamario.
  • Tomarse el tiempo necesario: usa el tiempo necesario, un autoexamen toma varios minutos.
  • Seguir un patrón: de esta manera podes asegurarte que examinaste la mama de forma completa.

Mamografía

Algunos expertos aconsejan que las mujeres adultas se realicen este estudio cada dos años a partir de los 50 años. La ventaja de la mamografía es que permite detectar tumores no palpables, o que incluso estén en fase pre-maligna. Gracias a ello es posible realizar tratamientos menos invasivos y reducir la mortalidad en un 20%.

El Ministerio de Salud de la Nación recomienda a las mujeres de 50 a 69 años consultar siempre a un médico sobre la conveniencia o no de hacerme una mamografía. Asimismo, este estudio debe acompañarse de un examen físico de las mamas.

Si la mamografía arroja una imagen sospechosa de cáncer, o el médico registra una anomalía como lesiones visibles y/o palpables en el pecho, es importante realizar una biopsia. Con la biopsia un médico patólogo analizará una extracción de tejidos y células para estudiar si hay signos de la enfermedad. Si fuera positivo, tranquila: pueden conversar con tu médico para decidir el mejor tratamiento.
