So why is humour so important?

El sentido del humor es una herramienta poderosa para combatir el stress, la angustia, la timidez, y se usa en múltiples situaciones con las que nos encontramos cada día. Están quienes lo utilizan para romper el hielo, reírse de uno mismo ante una situación embarazosa, o quienes lo utilizan como un medio para combatir el dolor, o transitar una situación angustiante.

La psicología se ha ocupado mucho de este tema, se han escrito ríos de tinta sobre el humor y su asociación con el inconsciente, desde que Freud, el padre de la psicología haya escrito, allá por finales del 1800 que el chiste “es una formación inconsciente”, es decir, muchas veces expresa cosas que no podemos decir abiertamente o que simplemente es la forma que encontramos para expresarnos, o un mecanismo de defensa, cuando nos sentimos amenazados.

El chiste, al igual que el humor puede servirnos para socializar, reírnos, liberar endorfinas y ser más felices, pero también para ayudarnos a salir del paso sin que nos queden secuelas emocionales ante situaciones que nos desbordan, como cuando alguien está en un velorio y cuenta alguna anécdota graciosa sobre el fallecido, como para mitigar el dolor.

En esto, el humor tiene mucho de ayuda para la desconexión emocional, una especie de mecanismo psicológico que nos ayuda a reírnos tomando distancia de situaciones que pueden ser desagradables, y de una forma u otra terminamos transformando en una situación menos incómoda.

Pero también, el humor es buena herramienta a la hora de utilizar el doble lenguaje o la ambigüedad, es decir, el humor tiene un fuerte contenido social, e incluso sus componentes son leídos en clave cultural, un mismo chiste no funciona en todas partes de la misma manera, y son los valores compartidos, las experiencias vividas, las que hacen transformar una simple frase en algo gracioso.

Para muchos profesionales de la psicología, el chiste, o el humor, hoy más que nunca sirve para adaptarnos a un mundo cada vez más hostil, en dónde las palabras tienen mucho más peso que las acciones. De hecho, las palabras tienen hoy tantos sentidos, se han vuelto tan polisémicas, que muchas veces es sólo a través de este recurso como podemos acercarnos sin salir golpeados por otros, que muchas veces se ofenden al no coincidir con nuestros pensamientos o posturas ante cosas tanto importantes como triviales. En definitiva, el humor trae a la risa, y la risa a la felicidad, por lo que, reírse siempre es un buen síntoma de que estamos en el camino correcto, y nos hace sentir ese “alivio mágico” que cada vez necesitamos con mayor frecuencia. ¡A reírse!, disfrutar la vida, y tratar de ser un poquito más felices cada día, las razones nunca faltan!
