La pandemia del COVID ha dejado secuelas que sobrepasan en mucho a la propia enfermedad. Entre las más importantes, sin duda los trastornos mentales, como la depresión, ha ido en aumento durante 2020. Si bien ya desde hace unos años la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) viene alertando sobre el aumento de millones de casos en el mundo, el encierro termino de posicionarla como una de las afecciones más problemática de nuestro tiempo.
Hay quienes confunden la depresión con “sentirse triste”, pero la depresión es una enfermedad que trasciende la tristeza, es mucho más profunda, y puede afectar tanto nuestra vida social como laboral. Generalmente afecta múltiples dimensiones, involucrando la insatisfacción continua ante todo lo que nos rodea, la pérdida de interés en cosas placenteras, incluido el sexo, la falta de atención y un cansancio crónico suelen ser algunos de los síntomas más recurrentes. Otros síntomas son la falta de sueño y hambre, y las dificultades para conciliar el sueño, sumado a frecuentes sentimientos de culpabilidad.
Las depresiones se han instalado como la cuarta causa de pérdida en la calidad de vida de las personas, según la propia OMS, e influyen en ellas el contexto negativo del entorno, como nuestro propio organismo. Entre los contextos negativos se encuentran las relaciones conflictivas, los entornos familiares negativos, los problemas económicos y las situaciones traumáticas como la violencia o la pérdida de un ser querido, algo que en esta pandemia se amplificó muchísimo.
El contexto de encierro que se vivió durante 2020, sumado a la crisis económica, que en países como la Argentina trajo además aparejado la pérdida de empleo, tenso todas las estructuras familiares y las redes de contención, y eso se vio reflejado en un aumento del consumo de alcohol, drogas y aumento de la depresión, según alertan todos los expertos en salud mental.
Y no sólo se manifiesta en adultos, también se ha visto su crecimiento en niños y adolescentes. Por lo tanto resulta imperioso estar siempre atentos a este tipo de trastornos que pueda sufrir algún amigo o familiar, y recomendarle que busque ayuda profesional, dado que necesitan tratamiento y un acompañamiento terapéutico adecuado. La pandemia va a continuar, por lo que es importante que le prestemos más atención que nunca a nuestras emociones, estados de ánimos y necesidades para poder vivir con la mejor calidad de vida posible.
