Gran paso: la NASA voló un dron en otro planeta por primera vez

Se trata de Ingenuity, un dron espacial de última tecnología. Pesa menos de dos kilos y está diseñado para volar en el aire del planeta Marte.

Parece una ingenuidad, pero no lo es: Ingenuity de la NASA es el primer artefacto no tripulado en volar sobre suelo marciano. Con gritos y aplausos de todo el equipo se celebró un vuelo que parece inaugurar una nueva etapa en la exploración del planeta rojo.

El Ingenuity pesa menos de dos kilos y lo propulsa una hélice especialmente diseñada para poder funcionar en el fino aire marciano, un 99% menos denso que el de la Tierra. Håvard Grip, el piloto que comandó a la proeza desde Pasadena afirmó: “Ingenuity ha conseguido el primer vuelo autopropulsado en otro planeta”

Las operaciones fueron comandadas desde el Laboratorio de Propulsión a Chorro que la NASA tiene en Pasadena, California. Solamente 54,6 millones de kilómetros separaron a Grip y su equipo del pequeño Ingenuity.

El trayecto programado tenía previsto durar 40 segundos y alcanzar una altura de tres metros sobre la superficie, lo que desde la NASA aseguran que ha sucedido.

No obstante, Ingenuity es solamente un granito de arena dentro de la mayor misión de exploración marciana. En realidad, el pequeño dron fue transportado por el Perseverance, el vehículo terrestre más sofisticado que se envió a Marte. La curiosa dupla arribó al planeta rojo este 18 de febrero y continúan con su exploración de la superficie marciana.

“La atmósfera de Marte es la más difícil para volar que conocemos”, explica Jorge Pla-García, español miembro de la misión. La escasa densidad del aire dificulta la elevación. Es por ello que las aspas del Ingenuity son muy grandes para su tamaño -1,2 metros de diámetro- y giran a 2.400 revoluciones por minuto.

El objetivo de estos drones es mejorar la calidad de exploración: al volar podrán registrar lugares más escarpados y complicados de Marte. Asimismo, se espera que brinden apoyo cuando lleguen misiones tripuladas en el futuro.
